Nick Adams - Biographical SketchI have twenty-four years experience in Ontario as an archaeological and heritage specialist, having worked both as a provincial government archaeologist, and as a consultant. I am licensed to undertake archaeological consulting projects throughout the province of Ontario.
Adams Heritage has conducted archaeological and heritage projects across Ontario since 1989. Between 1990 and 1993, we completed heritage resource assessments of the proposed route of Highway 416 (between Prescott and Ottawa), and additional surveys of adjacent service roads on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. Other projects have included a number of subdivision assessments in the Greater Kingston area, including the excavation of a fifteenth century Iroquoian settlement. We have undertaken numerous pipeline route studies in eastern Ontario for TransCanada PipeLines Ltd. Archaeological projects have been undertaken in northern Ontario on behalf of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (>Mississagi and Biscotasi Provincial Waterway Parks) and inconjunction with multi-disciplinary teams, for such private corporations as Royal Oak Mines Inc. , Echo Bay Mines Inc. and Monopros Ltd. Excavations have included the examination of a Palaeo-Indian site within the City of Thunder Bay, the excavation of a small Archaic site in Eastern Ontario, and the examination of disturbed eighteenth century burials at Fort Frontenac, Kingston.
During 1993, I was selected by the Ontario Archaeological Society to write the text for a Field Manual for Avocational Archaeologists. This has now been published and is the standard reference for amateur archaeologists in Ontario. During 1994 I developed a computerized encyclopedia of the Prehistory of Ontario for Windows for which I was awarded the 1995 "Special Achievement" award by the Ontario Association of Professional Archaeologists. In partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation, I recently completed an interactive computer guide to the conservation of Ontario's archaeological heritage within the Land Use Planning process, for municipalities, developers and engineers.
Publication of the Archaeology of Southern Ontario to A.D. 1650 on CD, as a joint project with the London Chapter of the Ontario Archaeological Society, and the first 20 years of the scholarly journal Ontario Archaeology, followed in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
